Your class includes shopping with Susan in New York City to purchase the best fabric, linings, trims and buttons for your jacket.

NYC

You will then fine tune the muslin and, under Susan’s instruction, devote yourself to crafting your classic French jacket using haute couture techniques unique to the construction of these jackets.

During the week you will be able to examine a number of Susan’s jackets, adapt your sleeve pattern (or use one of Susan’s) to allow for better placket placement and learn how to apply the trims, buttons and pockets that are essential components of these jackets.

You will come away from the class with a true fashion classic and the skills to add more of these garments to your wardrobe.

Come study with Sarah Veblen, master fitter and author of The Complete Photo Guide to Perfect Fitting.

Anyone can learn to fit.

  1. The first key to unlocking the mystery of fitting garments is to use specific axis lines drawn on the test garment.
  2. The second ingredient is to train your eye to recognize what fitting problems look like.
  3. And the third piece of the puzzle is to practice.

In this two-day class, you’ll learn the basics of fitting. Under Sarah Veblen’s guidance, you’ll practice fitting a darted straight skirt and a princess bodice on another class participant. In turn, your fitting buddy will fit you. Not only will you gain confidence in your ability to fit, but you’ll also come away with two test garments that are well on their way to having a perfect fit.

June 13, 2012: The Inter-relationship Between Fit and Patternmaking

Artisan Sewing Classes Presents:

Sarah Veblen

If you enjoy garment sewing, understanding the basics of patternmaking will give you the freedom to confidently make pattern changes.

Fit and patternmaking are so closely linked, it’s just about impossible to explore one subject without bringing the other topic into the discussion. For example, any change to the fit of a garment is going to require some sort of pattern adjustment if you want to be able to reproduce the garment. And pattern adjustments are much more successful if you take into consideration the figure that will be wearing the garment.

Being able to make pattern changes means that you can pursue a better fitting garment as well as your own design ideas.

In this 5-hour class, Sarah Veblen provides a combination of lecture, demonstrations, and hands-on pattern exercises. You will learn:

  • basic patternmaking skills such as blending seam lineslearn how to make patterns
  • truing pattern seams
  • truing dart legs
  • and making length and width adjustments.

In addition, Sarah will demonstrate how to transfer fitting changes from a test garment to a pattern. And she will share the tips she uses that prevent confusion and ensure success.

Please Note: This day-long seminar is included when you register for either ‘Patternmaking Skills for Sewing Pros and Hobbyists’ or ‘Focus on Fit: Straight Skirt with Darts and Princess Bodice.’

June 9-12, 2012: Patternmaking Skills For Sewing Pros and Hobbyists

Artisan Sewing Classes Presents:

Sarah Veblen

Patternmaking is the backbone of creating garments.

There are a number of methods used to develop patterns: flat patternmaking, drafting, draping, copying an existing garment, and enlarging a small-scale pattern. But the purpose of each is the same: to give someone who sews a way to reliably reproduce a garment.

In this 4-day class, Sarah Veblen introduces you to each of these patternmaking methods, so that you understand their differences and have a basic working knowledge of each one. Because flat patternmaking techniques are used in all of the methods, special time and attention will be devoted to learning many flat patternmaking skills.

The class is a combination of lecture, demonstrations, and lots of hands-on exercises. Topics that will be covered include:

  • Flat pattern techniques such as walking and truing a pattern, truing dart legs, creating notches, re-positioning a dart, dart manipulation and dart transfers, creating dart equivalents, and making full bust and small bust adjustments.
  • Establishing accurate grainlines.
  • The difference between industry patterns for ready-to-wear clothing, commercial patterns available to sewing enthusiasts, and custom patterns that dressmakers develop.
  • Enlarging a half-scale pattern.
  • Basics of draping a bodice.
  • Making a pattern from a draped bodice.
  • Taking a person’s measurements accurately.
  • Basics of drafting a bodice sloper and how to use the draft.
  • Copying an existing garment.

Date: June 9 – 12, 2012
Time: 8:30 am – 6:00 pm each day
