April 6-8, 2013: NYC Garment District Trip

Visit the New York City Garment District with Artisan Sewing Classes

NYC

If you have ever wanted to go to New York to shop for fabric, now is the time.

Genevieve has been traveling to NYC for over two decades to buy fabric for clients and for her bridal business. She will share her resources, which include the places to shop for fabrics, notions, trims and supplies. You will be able to visit famous name stores, but the list also includes lesser known, yet reasonably priced resources.

The trip also includes an optional tour – at no extra charge – of a 4th generation family owned fabric flower factory.  If culture is your thing – the number of museums, restaurants and tourist attractions abound, not to mention the theater.  If you like, bring a family member or friend along, there will be time to get to know your surroundings and sight-see.

Getting into and around the city is very easy and by using this trip as a learning tool, you will be able to make trips on your own to New York with ease and confidence in the future.

The cost of the trip includes travel to and from NYC by train originating in Lynchburg, VA and two nights stay (room for 4) in NYC at the Radisson Martinique near Macy’s at Herald Square.  Extras on your own.  More extensive trip details after you register and if there is anything specific you are looking for, please let Genevieve know in order to provide you with the best possible experience.

January 26, 2013: Basic Skirt Sloper 101

Artisan Sewing Classes Presents:

Basic Skirt Sloper 101

OPTIONAL 2nd day on February 2, 2013 (Prerequisite is Day 1)
Basic sewing skills are needed for this course.

REGISTRATION ENDED. CLASS FULL.

Have you ever had a skirt that never quite fit you correctly?
Have you ever had a problem trying to achieve a decent fit from a store bought pattern?

There are 2 ways to solve these pesky situations – to make a sloper either by draping or by using your own measurements.

In this class, you will learn to draft a skirt sloper from your own measurements that will ensure a great fitting skirt every time. Each day will start out with a lecture followed by hands on exercises designed to help you create a sloper that FITS YOU.

People often ask what the difference is between a sloper and a pattern.  The best explanation is that the sloper is a draft of a garment that fits with a minimum of wear ease and has no design ease at all – in other words, it should be like a second skin.  The sloper also has no seam allowances.

Design changes, design ease, wear ease and seam allowances are added to the sloper in order to create the pattern.

Day 1 – Creating a Skirt Sloper

On the first day of class, you will learn the best way to take your measurements and the formulas involved in producing your sloper. It is difficult to take measurements on yourself, so you will practice this skill on each other.  Not only is this a great way to get accurate measurements for yourself, you will also become aware of specific fit issues that can be addressed at this time.

In the hands on portion of the class, using your own measurements, you will create a sloper to fit you using the drafting tools of the trade.  Once you have perfected the sloper, the creativity can begin!

Day 2 (optional) – Designing a Skirt from a Sloper

(must bring completed sloper from day 1 class)

The second day of this class will be spent on discussion of how to make design changes to the sloper in order to create a skirt.  We will address questions such as deciding how much ease to put in the pattern and how to change a straight skirt to an A-line skirt or a gored skirt.  What length and proportion looks best on you? Waistband or no waistband?  What about pockets?

In the hands on portion of this class, you will try your hand at simple design changes and make a skirt mock-up (also called a muslin or a toile) based on those changes. Interestingly enough muslin also refers to the type of inexpensive fabric used to make the mock-up. From your mockup, we will discuss how you can then make a pattern.  Remember, the pattern must not only include the skirt pieces, but also any facing, lining, interfacing and miscellaneous pieces as well.

You can then apply this process of learning simple design changes as a stepping stone to create more designs!
