September 14-16, 2013: Knits 101

Artisan Sewing Classes Presents:

Knits 101

Have you ever wondered why clothing made from knit fabrics moved from weekends and the workout room into our daily lives? When you look at knit garments in the store or in a catalog, do some catch your eye while others are “just there”? Have you noticed that some of your knit clothing sits in the dresser drawer, but you’re always reaching for others?

Knit garments are here to stay because they are easy to care for, they don’t tend to wrinkle, and they are so comfortable to wear.

This class will give you the opportunity to explore knits – how to recognize and choose knits, how to sew them to get good results, and how to design with knits.
You will leave the class with a basic pattern that fits (choose from a T-shirt, a close-fitting bodysuit or a camisole pattern) and a notebook of ideas and techniques on how to make knit garments look terrific. We will review patternmaking skills so that you can easily make the changes necessary to rework your mock-up into a properly fitted garment. Mornings will usually be devoted to lecture and discussion, and afternoons will generally involve more hands-on tasks.

Days 1 and 2 (8:30 – 5:30 each day) include:

  •  Recognizing different knit fabrics and knit structures.
  •  Inherent stretch properties of knits in comparison to the addition of spandex.
  •  The use of darts and other fitting style lines in knits.
  •  Matching knit fabrics to different garment styles.
  •  Techniques for knit fabrics: stay taping; judging the length of self-fabric bands/cuffs; hemming; finishing options; applying trims.

Optional Half-Day 3 (8:30-12:00) includes:

  •  Using your basic patterns with different knit fabrics.
  •  Easy pattern variations to make.
  •  Designing with knits.
  •  How to select commercial patterns for a knit fabric, including what size to choose.

After your registration is complete, you will receive:

  • A detailed supply list (including correct knit fabric choices and amount of knit fabric you will need to purchase).
  • A set of instructions for preparing the first mock-ups of your T-shirt, close-fitting bodysuit or camisole, including pattern suggestions. (You need to arrive with these completed. Sarah will personally fit your garment so that you can fine-tune your pattern and make a new mock-up.)

Date:

Saturday, September 14 and Sunday, September 15, 2013 (with optional additional half day Monday, September 16, 2013)

Time and Class fee:

September 14 and 15, 2013 – $475.00
September 14 and 15, 2013 with half day September 16, 2013 – $575.00

January 26, 2013: Basic Skirt Sloper 101

Artisan Sewing Classes Presents:

Basic Skirt Sloper 101

OPTIONAL 2nd day on February 2, 2013 (Prerequisite is Day 1)
Basic sewing skills are needed for this course.

REGISTRATION ENDED. CLASS FULL.

Have you ever had a skirt that never quite fit you correctly?
Have you ever had a problem trying to achieve a decent fit from a store bought pattern?

There are 2 ways to solve these pesky situations – to make a sloper either by draping or by using your own measurements.

In this class, you will learn to draft a skirt sloper from your own measurements that will ensure a great fitting skirt every time. Each day will start out with a lecture followed by hands on exercises designed to help you create a sloper that FITS YOU.

People often ask what the difference is between a sloper and a pattern.  The best explanation is that the sloper is a draft of a garment that fits with a minimum of wear ease and has no design ease at all – in other words, it should be like a second skin.  The sloper also has no seam allowances.

Design changes, design ease, wear ease and seam allowances are added to the sloper in order to create the pattern.

Day 1 – Creating a Skirt Sloper

On the first day of class, you will learn the best way to take your measurements and the formulas involved in producing your sloper. It is difficult to take measurements on yourself, so you will practice this skill on each other.  Not only is this a great way to get accurate measurements for yourself, you will also become aware of specific fit issues that can be addressed at this time.

In the hands on portion of the class, using your own measurements, you will create a sloper to fit you using the drafting tools of the trade.  Once you have perfected the sloper, the creativity can begin!

Day 2 (optional) – Designing a Skirt from a Sloper

(must bring completed sloper from day 1 class)

The second day of this class will be spent on discussion of how to make design changes to the sloper in order to create a skirt.  We will address questions such as deciding how much ease to put in the pattern and how to change a straight skirt to an A-line skirt or a gored skirt.  What length and proportion looks best on you? Waistband or no waistband?  What about pockets?

In the hands on portion of this class, you will try your hand at simple design changes and make a skirt mock-up (also called a muslin or a toile) based on those changes. Interestingly enough muslin also refers to the type of inexpensive fabric used to make the mock-up. From your mockup, we will discuss how you can then make a pattern.  Remember, the pattern must not only include the skirt pieces, but also any facing, lining, interfacing and miscellaneous pieces as well.

100_0638

You can then apply this process of learning simple design changes as a stepping stone to create more designs!

June 13, 2012: The Inter-relationship Between Fit and Patternmaking

Artisan Sewing Classes Presents:

Sarah Veblen

If you enjoy garment sewing, understanding the basics of patternmaking will give you the freedom to confidently make pattern changes.

Fit and patternmaking are so closely linked, it’s just about impossible to explore one subject without bringing the other topic into the discussion. For example, any change to the fit of a garment is going to require some sort of pattern adjustment if you want to be able to reproduce the garment. And pattern adjustments are much more successful if you take into consideration the figure that will be wearing the garment.

Being able to make pattern changes means that you can pursue a better fitting garment as well as your own design ideas.

In this 5-hour class, Sarah Veblen provides a combination of lecture, demonstrations, and hands-on pattern exercises. You will learn:

  • basic patternmaking skills such as blending seam lineslearn how to make patterns
  • truing pattern seams
  • truing dart legs
  • and making length and width adjustments.

In addition, Sarah will demonstrate how to transfer fitting changes from a test garment to a pattern. And she will share the tips she uses that prevent confusion and ensure success.

Please Note: This day-long seminar is included when you register for either ‘Patternmaking Skills for Sewing Pros and Hobbyists’ or ‘Focus on Fit: Straight Skirt with Darts and Princess Bodice.’

Date: June 13, 2012
Time: 9:00 am – 3:00 pm

Class fee:
ASG and ASDP members – $60.00
Non-members – $70.00
Combined rate for taking all three classes during June 9-15: $1,145.00.
